  2. US sociologist and campaigner for women's
  3. rights. In 1889 she founded and led the
  4. social settlement of Hull House, Chicago, one
  5. of the earliest community centres. She was
  6. vice president of the National American Women
  7. Suffrage Alliance 1911-14, and in 1915 led
  8. the Women's Peace Party and the first Women's
  9. Peace Congress. She shared the Nobel Peace
  10. Prize 1931. Her publications include Newer
  11. Ideals of Peace 1907 and Twenty Years at Hull
  12. House 1910.
